coa lamp I

The Côa lamps are made of schist collected along the margins of the Côa River. They are an homage to the ancient rock engravings of the Côa Valley — the oldest open-air engravings in Europe that we know of. Engraved using silex stones, the same tools once employed by Paleolithic humans, the artisans traced the topographical lines of the region onto each lamp, echoing the gestures of our ancestors who once carved into the same rock. The result connects past and present through schist — a material that continues to record and reflect the stories of its land. Each lamp includes a proximity sensor that allows the light to be turned on, off, and dimmed with a simple gesture at close range.
